Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

Eight months after its debut as a concept vehicle at the 2014 Auto Expo, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has been introduced in the Indian market. Based on a new platform designed to maximise performance and efficiency, the new Ciaz represents Maruti in the hotly contested C-segment sedan market. It replaces the SX4 sedan which has been on sale since 2006.

Exterior

The design of the Ciaz is based on the Suzuki Authentics concept which was showcased first at the 2014 Shanghai Motor Show in April and then shown in production form as the China- spec Alivio sedan. It gets an aggressive front fascia, with trapezoidal front grille that features ample amount of chrome. The sweptback headlights and the elongated hood further enhance its street presence. The side profile is a rather conservative affair but one that should work for Maruti Suzuki. It features delicately flared wheel arches, chrome door handles and a strong shoulder line which works well with the forward leaning stance of the car.

At the rear, the Ciaz gets the now segment-standard wrap around tail lamps which lend the car a premium look. The rear bumper is large and includes integrated reflectors. There’s also a lip spoiler and chrome badges across all variants.

The Ciaz is longer than its immediate competitors, the new Honda City and the Hyundai Verna. Measuring 4,545 mm in length, the Ciaz is expected to offer a better rear seat experience than its predecessor – the SX4.

Interior

Inside, the Ciaz gets a simple and clutter-free design. The dashboard design is reminiscent of other Maruti models including the Ertiga and the Swift Dzire with its all-beige treatment. The company has played it safe here like in the styling department. The car gets keyless entry and start, Aux-in, USB, Bluetooth streaming with telephony, automatic retract for the ORVMs, reversing camera and navigation system. It also gets a sunshade for the rear windscreen, which will be appreciated by occupants at the rear.

The integrated audio system is a touch screen unit – a segment first. The steering gets controls for the audio system and telephony controls on the left unlike the competition that has buttons spread on either sides. The faux-wood and aluminium inserts, light colour of the upholstery and plastics lend a bright and airy feel to the interior.

The SX4 has always been a spacious car and the same will be the case with the Ciaz. The cabin is ergonomically designed and comfortable enough to accommodate up to five adults.

Engine and Gearbox

Maruti Suzuki is continuing with the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel and the 1.4-litre K-Series petrol engine that is currently sold in a few of its existing models. While the diesel unit is found in quite a few models, the 1.4-litre petrol is only featured in the Ertiga MPV. The latter engine makes 92bhp of power and 130Nm of torque. The diesel engine, on the other hand, produces 90bhp of power and 200Nm of torque.

As for the gearbox options, the Ciaz can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. While the manual is available in both petrol and diesel variant, the 4-speed auto is limited to a select petrol variant. Considering these specifications, there is no denying the fact that the Ciaz is the least powerful car in the class, however, it is still potent enough for most occasions.

Price and competition

Being a Maruti, the Ciaz puts up a strong case for itself when it comes to value for money. It competes with other C-segment vehicles such as the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento and the likes. It also competes with similarly priced crossovers like the Ford EcoSport and to some extent, the Renault Duster as well.

New Maruti Alto K10

The Alto is unarguably the most famous car in the average Indian household. Over the years, the Alto name has become a default choice for entry level car buyers in India. It is for this reason alone that Alto models continue to be the best selling cars in India for years now. Staying strong on its brand virtues like fuel economy, peppy performance and cost-effectiveness, the Alto K10 is a very capable contender in it’s segment. The Alto K10 looks contemporary from the outside and upmarket on the inside.
The Alto K10 has always been a fun to drive little hatchback. The car comes with a 1.0 litre K-series petrol powertrain. The sprightly motor coupled to a lightweight chassis makes driving experience on the Alto K10 involving. Whether it’s daily city commutes or enthusiastic driving around the hills, the Alto K10 is never short on fun factor. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the gearshifts are short and crisp; delivering positive shifts every time you slot the lever in to the gear speed of your choice.
Maruti is also offering an AMT gearbox on the Alto K10. This unit is similar to that featured in the Celerio. The Alto K10 AMT, or AGS as Maruti is calling it in the K10, is the most affordable automatic car in the country. The Alto K10 AMT is aimed at making urban commute an easy affair with its ease of use operation. The AMT gearbox performs well for our road-conditions and until the time one tries to drive it in a spirited manner, the shifts are jerk-free and positive. Maruti has also managed to eek out an identical mileage figure from the AMT equipped version as compared to the conventional 5-speed manual transmission.
The top-end model also gets a driver side airbag. While safety equipment like ABS or EBD have been given a miss even on the new model, the new Alto K10 now comes equipped with ventilated disc brakes on front wheels for improved braking and better heat dissipation characteristics in event of an emergency or under hard braking.
The Alto K10 still remains a very likeable car for everything it offers to its consumers. It’s fuel efficient, fun and easy to drive, and most importantly has Maruti’s dealer and customer support as its backbone. The interiors, which were a major disappointment on the previous model, have now been thoroughly revised with a new design and theme, and they now look and feel more upmarket than before. The space at the back still remains tight with limited headroom and knee room, as a result of which, passengers may feel cramped at the rear bench over long drives. Nevertheless, the Alto K10 is still going to be a preferred choice among bachelors and young professionals who mostly drive solo and seek fun and economy in a reliable and cost-effective package.

Maruti Alto K10 Interiors

Towards the bottom part, which is finished in beige, you have all the air-conditioning controls integrated on to it. The 3-spoke steering wheel with silver accents looks nice and complements the design theme. Similarly, the speedometer cluster feature a 3-pod design and houses a tachometer along with a speedometer and driver information system or MID that displays readout for fuel, trips, mileage etc.

The dashboard sports a dual-tone black and beige combo that looks striking for an entry level hatchback. The centre console finished in piano black theme features a 2-DIN stereo that incorporates CD, USB, AUX and Radio connectivity.
The power-window switches are located on the floor console for convenience. The ORVMs are also internally adjustable. The front seats have 2 cup holders in front of the gear-shifter.

The styling on the Alto K10 is a revised version of that of the standard Alto 800. The front fascia adorns new swept-black headlamps, a new-design chrome grille and a ‘sporty’ new bumper. At the rear, the new Alto K10 draws more resemblance with the Alto 800 as it has a similarly designed rear-end profile. The tail-lamps cluster is new and sports jewel-finished design theme. The newly designed tail-gate gives the car a wider look when viewed from the rear angle. Overall, the design has some quirky and odd bits, but over the time they are likely grow on you

Maruti Alto K10 Engine & Performance

The AMT gearbox does not feel as enthusiastic as the standard 5-speed manual gearbox when driving sprightly. Although, at other times, it feels effortless and jerk-free, especially during in city commutes and while encountering bumper-to-bumper peak hour traffic. The 1.0 litre 3-cylinder K-series engine on the Alto K10 is a gem in its own right. Club it with the car’s compact dimensions and light weight structure, and you’re looking at a car that is immense fun to potter around. The engine is free-revving and whichever gear you are in it always feels right at home throughout the rev-band. Even with A/C running under full load conditions, the Alto K10 pulls aways effortlessly and does not feel underpowered at all. The performance from the engine is more than just adequate for a car of this size!
The NVH levels are satisfactory. The road, tyre and outside noises are well contained. Albeit, at higher speeds they do tend to filter in to the cabin. That said, you hardly notice these petty things since most of the time you are busy enjoying the peppy performance that this little car offers.

Maruti also claims that the brakes are designed to bring down brake pedal effort for added comfort. The Alto K10 is a nimble handler. Like it has been in the past, the Alto K10 is easy to maneuver in tight spots and has a light steering wheel which makes driving an effortless affair. The high-profile skinny tyres do limit its cornering capabilities though. That said, the Alto K10 handles superbly and from an enthusiast’s point of view it encourages and inspires confidence while driving in a spirited manner. The engine works in sync with the dynamics of the car and the combination of both simply puts a smile on the driver’s face.
The Alto K10 does not have any significant active or passive safety kit. Only the higher end VXi (O) variant comes with a driver-side airbag and that’s about it. Essential features like ABS, EBD etc. Are still missed out on the new Alto K10.
